Job Seekers

Are you looking to start a new job out in the community? Starkey offers a variety of employment services that will help you land and keep that first job!

If so, the first step is to apply to Kansas Rehabilitation Services with the help of a parent, guardian or a case manager. You can contact them at (316) 337-6546.

The Process

  • A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor will interview you and do an assessment to learn your job preferences and find out areas where you may need extra support. Then they will work with you to create a vocational objective, or what kind of job you want to do.
  • Your Rehabilitation counselor with make the referral to a job placement provider like Starkey.
  • The Starkey team will work with your job goals and outline the expectations of the program. They will meet with you twice a month for job development, working on things like making a good first impression, concentrating on job tasks and getting along with teammates. They will also help you learn where to look for jobs, practice interviews with you and take you to job sites to try out jobs to see if they are a good fit.
  • Once you are hired, a coach will be with you at the job site, teaching you how to do that specific job and staying with you for as long as you need, to make sure you feel comfortable. If you need accommodations or tools to do the job, your coach can make sure you have those. A job coach talks regularly with your supervisor, too, and can also help arrange transportation.
  • Over time, as you become confident in your job and do not need as much training, the job coach will check in with you less frequently to make sure everything is going well. However, your coach is there for you any time you need!
